Tulsion® Ion Exchange Resins for Heavy Metal and Colour Removal in PCB Effluent

Effluent from printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing contain multiple contaminants that need to be effectively removed before discharge. A PCB manufacturer approached Thermax for a solution capable of removing multiple contaminants while ensuring the outlet water meet pollution control board standards.

Complex Contaminants in PCB Manufacturing Effluent

The PCB manufacturing effluent contained high concentrations of copper, sulphates, chlorides, and other organic and inorganic impurities. The presence of dyes also resulted in strong colouration of the wastewater. The customer required a reliable solution that could remove these multiple contaminants within a single treatment system while ensuring that the treated outlet water consistently met pollution control norms.

Targeted Treatment Using Tulsion® CH-90 and Tulsion® A-72 MP

Thermax evaluated the effluent and conducted several trials using Tulsion® ion exchange resins. Following these trials, Thermax recommended a combination of Tulsion® CH-90, a chelating resin for heavy metal removal and Tulsion® A-72 MP, a strong base anion resin for the removal of colour and organics. The combination of these resins was integrated into the customer’s existing effluent treatment plant (ETP) to achieve the required treatment performance.

Colourless Effluent with Heavy Metals Below 2 ppm 

Following the implementation of the Tulsion® ion exchange resin solution, the treated effluent became colourless and the heavy metal concentration was reduced to less than 2 ppm. The upgraded treatment process enabled the customer to meet the required outlet water quality standards while providing simpler operations and consistent treatment performance.
